Discussion:
[urbit] Can't speak in talk

Hi,

I'm trying to get back onto the network and I've joined 'urbit-meta' but I
can't seem to say anything. I can see the last number of messages and I'm
not sure if they're coming in on real-time due to the low traffic.

I'm trying to figure out how to kill talk and restart it but I can't find
how to do that right now. Would that help? Any other suggestions?

(a) what is your urbit? (b) did you see the two messages I just
posted, "this is a test comment" and "issues are reported"?

Did you miss the last continuity breach? That would be one obvious
cause of these symptoms. :-/

Also, another typical cause of symptoms like this would be
reactivating a backup image of an urbit which had had a copy of it
operated. Backups don't really work in the conventional sense with an
urbit.

This is happening to me as well. I can send/receive messages to friends but
not ~doznec/urbit-meta. I think it happened after a "disconnect"? leaving
and rejoining doesn't seem to fix it either...

I would look at this but it's terrible timing, as I'm out in nature. Anton or Philip?

Is ~naclun-hostel still running? I just tried |hi'ing from ~doznec and
failed. This is suspicious on account of because this happened to a couple
of the ships that were handling urbit.org, but I hadn't seen it happen to
anybody else.

I received your pier and fired it up, and I could immediately send messages
to ~doznec/urbit-meta. I don't know what happened there, but I'll send you
back your pier. Can you check and see if it works for you now? Whatever
you do, don't start up your old pier.

Is ~naclun-hostel still running? I just tried |hi'ing from ~doznec and failed
No I switched to another planet in the meantime.

Just to be sure: I could always send messages there, I just couldn't
receive them.

I just tried again and it still seems borked
Whatever you do, don't start up your old pier
I only read this after starting it up this morning -_-

Ah, that's what I get for debugging late on a friday night. I didn't try
receiving messages. Unfortunately, if two versions of the planet have been
started up independently I'm not sure it'll be recoverable.

Alright thanks anyways, I'll keep an eye out if this happens again.
Hopefully I can learn enough nock + hoon + ames so I can figure out
ways to debug this myself in the future.

In the meantime I'm happy with my new home ~ravmyr-holber and will
miss ~naclun-hostel (rip)

I have the same problem with ~ripnul-rilnyx, I can send messages but not
receive them.

I had done a few things I never did before, like start a moon and mount
home directory.
I also used the web interface and managed to set the audience to some ship
which
confused me so I started linking/unlinking, mounting/unmounting anything
and everything.
I don't know if these actions are related to the problem.

My ship is in the hospital so I can't test anything. Just adding a
datapoint.
