Compiled Urbit on Debian, trying to start a comet, it basically hangs in
"awaiting hood, this may take a few minutes" state. Also getting "; ~zod
not responding still trying" message. Am I missing something or is the
server down?

Seems like you have no network connectivity. Things to try: 1, make sure your build and pill are fresh. 2, are you behind a restrictive firewall? This is a P2P network and some don't like that...

The network does appear to be up and we just tested Debian.

How recently did you build?

About 2 days ago. Pill is latest. Is there any way to get more informative
log of what's happening at network level?

Rebuilt it just now. Pill md5sum is 0379b07eb8847115a53b12ea7858c777
I have torrents working on this machine so P2P should work.

Pill md5 is correct. You're behind some kind of NAT, I assume? You
should be sending and receiving packets from zod.urbit.org
(192.241.195.84). Can you see if any packets from there are reaching
you?
